The Brief Wondrous life of Oscar Wao, a fictional novel written by Junot Diaz constructs a constant tone of disappointment and shock as a result of the tragedies that the characters undergo. Belicia, also known as Beli experiences  a demise that influences her behavior towards other characters and affect the construction of the plot as a whole.
As a result of Beli being adopted by La Inca, Beli became a hard-headed bold woman who felt like something was missing in her life.La Inca always tried to comfort Beli like a blood mother and always wanted the best for her, but Beli kept resisting this relationship.“La Inca talked about Beli becoming a female doctor. "(87) Beli being adopted plays a crucial role in the book's plot because the absence of a real mother influences Beli to do the things that she did, for example date a gangster that she encounters many life-threatening issues with. La Inca consistently encouraged Beli to continue her education and loved her unconditionally, but Beli was too caught up in wanting a different type of interesting love. While Beli didn't choose the path of education in life, she chose being caught up in a relationship she couldn't handle, “five ribs, broken; left kidney, bruised; right lung, collapsed; front teeth, blown out.” The man she thought she was in love with only brought her more pain and drama to her life, something Beli didn't need. He beat her like she was worth nothing, all the decisions and events that are occurring in Beli's life will all reflect upon the future of her kids Oscar and Lola. Although the demise of Beli’s biological mother burdened her greatly, the loss of her first born child and betrayal her first love made Beli feel like her life was completely worthless. After losing her first born child, and suffering many dreadful situations, La Inca finally made a safe decision for Beli and  decided that she needed to move away from Santo Domingo, and have a fresh start, "You have to send her away” (157) Beli says that she wants to be a new person and leave everything that happened behind. These events that took place affect the novel as a whole because their only  outlining the fuku curse, which will be passed down to Oscar, Beli’s soon to be son which will build up a higher level of traumatic events throughout this work as a whole.
Overall, the curse is whats causing the re-occurring bad luck in the novel. Curses are a very superstitious controversial topic that is still being questioned today. Many people claim to naturally have bad luck in their lives, but nothing can compare to what the characters in the book faced. Not having a biological mother by one's side can affect their attitudes and influence the individual to do things that will cause them many regrets later on in  life.
